BibleWorks Hebrew Vocabulary: Ross’ Introducing Biblical Hebrew
I’ve put together a Hebrew vocabulary file for use with BibleWorks. The file follows the vocabulary used in Introducing Biblical Hebrew by Dr. Allen P. Ross. I made use of the vocabulary words provided by BibleWorks and modified them to match Ross’ chapters and definitions. Unless I’ve missed some, every vocab listing in Ross chapters 1-40 should be contained in this file. Past chapter 40 Ross doesn’t have specific vocabulary lists.
To use:
Download the file Ross_Vocab.vrt.
Open the BibleWorks flashcard module
click File -> Import.
Import Ross_Vocab.vrt
BibleWorks allows you to filter by chapter so if you want to work with a specific chapter range go to Tools -> Filter check Filter by Chapter Range and enter the range you want to work with.
BibleWorks can also be used to print out review sheets. Use the chapter filter to limit the review to the chapters you want then go to Tools -> Sort to arrange those words however you like. When it’s set up, go to File -> Print Review List.
What I have found most useful is the ability to print flash cards. I buy simple business card paper from Wal-Mart and use that to print out my cards. I like to have nothing on the front but the Hebrew word, with the definition and chapter # on the back. To do this filter the words to the chapters you want to print then go to Tools -> Options. Uncheck everything in What to Print. Go to File -> Print Flash Cards. Make sure Front Side is checked, uncheck Card Border.
For the paper I have, the following numbers are used for Card Dimensions and Layout:
- Card Width 3.5
- Card Height 2.0
- All Offset values 0.5
- Cards Per Page 10
- Columns Per Page 2
Again, this is simple business card paper from Wal-Mart. The item # on the pack is #35596. I’m printing my cards on an HP LaserJet 1022, your printer may need some changes to the offset. Don’t try and print a lot of flash cards at once, play with it first to make sure the dimensions and layout settings work right for your printer.
When the first side is printed take the printouts and reverse their order. Imagine the pages were numbered and they came out page 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Rearrange them so that they are 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Then put the paper back in the printer, backwards. The bottom of the page should be fed in first. Go back to BibleWorks Tools -> Options and under What to Print check Chapter. Go to File -> Print Flash Cards, make sure Back Side is selected, and tell it to print. There you have it! Flash cards for your chapters, keyed to your chapters.
Most of the BibleWorks words have an audio file with them and since I based my file on the BibleWorks file, I use their audio file. When you are looking at a word you can click the Play button at the top to hear how the word is pronounced. This doesn’t always work since some of the BibleWorks words didn’t have an audio file, and some words in Ross weren’t listed in BibleWorks. For the curious, there are 478 vocabulary words listed in Ross’ book.
